Everything you need to know about mobile optometry — aged care, in-home visits, and workplace eye tests
A mobile optometrist is a qualified eye care professional who brings complete eye examination equipment directly to you — whether that's an aged care facility, your own home, a post-operative recovery setting, or your workplace. Instead of patients travelling to a clinic, we come to them. Our optometrists use portable, state-of-the-art equipment including digital retinal cameras and visual field analysers to provide the same quality of care you'd receive in a traditional practice — all in the comfort and familiarity of your usual environment.
We recommend annual comprehensive eye examinations for all adults over 65, and for everyone living in aged care. Research shows that 94% of aged care residents have at least one eye condition, and regular testing is essential for early detection of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. Older adults living at home, people with diabetes, and anyone with known eye conditions may need more frequent examinations — typically every 6 months — to monitor for changes and prevent vision loss.
Yes. Our in-home optometrist service is designed for housebound patients, people with limited mobility, recovering surgical patients, and older adults who find clinic visits stressful or difficult. We bring the full eye examination to your door, including digital retinal imaging, visual field testing, and glasses fitting. Home eye tests are Medicare bulk-billed for eligible patients across QLD and NSW, and we can dispense new spectacles directly from your home.
The most prevalent eye conditions in older adults include cataracts (affecting over 70% of aged care residents), glaucoma (12% of residents, with 50% undiagnosed), age-related macular degeneration (29% of residents), diabetic retinopathy (in 35% of diabetic patients), and uncorrected refractive errors (around 67% need glasses they don't have or have the wrong prescription). Early detection through regular eye examinations is crucial as most of these conditions are treatable when caught early.
Yes. Our post-operative home visit service supports patients recovering from cataract surgery and other eye procedures, particularly older patients who find it difficult to return to a clinic for follow-up. We perform in-home refractions to prescribe new glasses once your eyes have stabilised, monitor for post-surgical complications, and liaise with your ophthalmologist. The whole post-op refraction is completed without you having to leave your home.
Absolutely. Our mobile optometrists are specially trained to examine patients with cognitive impairment, both in aged care and in private homes. We use objective testing methods that don't require verbal responses, adapt our communication for different cognitive levels, and conduct examinations in the patient's familiar environment to reduce anxiety. Even patients with advanced dementia benefit from proper eye care — better vision often leads to reduced agitation, improved behaviour, and enhanced quality of life.
Yes. We provide on-site workplace eye tests across QLD and NSW for employers who want to look after their team's vision. Our corporate vision screening covers comprehensive eye examinations, computer/screen-use assessments, safety eyewear prescriptions, and WHS-compatible reporting. We come to your office, factory, or worksite, minimise disruption to shifts, and bulk-bill eligible employees through Medicare with a single invoice to the employer for any non-rebatable services.
Yes, Medicare covers comprehensive eye examinations performed by mobile optometrists — whether the appointment is in an aged care facility, your own home, or your workplace. Patients are entitled to a bulk-billed eye examination once every two years (or annually for those with certain health conditions including diabetes, or anyone aged 65 and over). There is no out-of-pocket cost for the eye examination itself for eligible patients — glasses and any optional private items are charged separately. We handle all Medicare billing directly, making the process simple for facilities, families, and employers.
Vision problems are a major contributing factor in up to 60% of falls in aged care and among older adults at home. Poor vision affects depth perception (judging distances to steps and obstacles), peripheral vision (missing hazards from the side), and contrast sensitivity (seeing edges of steps clearly). Research shows that cataract surgery alone reduces falls by 67%, and simply updating glasses prescriptions can reduce fall risk by 23%. Regular eye examinations are one of the most effective falls-prevention interventions available.
Research has established a clear link between untreated vision loss and cognitive decline. Studies show that uncorrected vision problems increase dementia risk by up to 64%, while cataract surgery reduces dementia progression by 30%. The brain requires constant visual stimulation to function optimally — when vision diminishes, cognitive pathways atrophy. Vision loss also leads to social isolation and reduced mental stimulation, both of which accelerate cognitive decline. Maintaining good vision is now considered a modifiable dementia risk factor.
Arranging a visit is simple. Contact Eye See You Optometry to discuss what you need — an aged care facility roster, a one-off in-home eye test, post-operative follow-up, or a workplace eye-test day. We're AHPRA-registered with full National Police Checks and professional indemnity insurance. We confirm a time, bring all the equipment, complete bulk-billed Medicare examinations, and provide written reports for care plans, GPs, or WHS records. There's no cost to the facility or employer — services are bulk-billed through Medicare for eligible patients.
Any vision complaint should be taken seriously and investigated promptly. Many older adults don't report vision problems because they assume it's 'just ageing' or don't want to be a burden. If they mention blurred vision, difficulty reading, eye pain, flashes of light, sudden vision changes, or you notice them bumping into things, squinting, or avoiding activities they used to enjoy, arrange an eye examination as soon as possible. If getting to a clinic is hard, an in-home eye test is the easiest option. Early detection of eye conditions can prevent permanent vision loss.
