Workplace Eye Tests in QLD & NSW: An Employer's WHS Compliance Guide

Vision is a workplace safety issue. Whether your team is operating heavy machinery, driving, working at heights, or spending most of the day in front of a screen, undetected vision problems create real risk — and clear WHS obligations for employers.

This guide explains what's expected, what an on-site workplace eye test covers, and how mobile testing keeps your team productive.

    What Australian WHS Law Expects

The model Work Health and Safety Act and Regulations require employers to identify and manage hazards — including vision-related hazards. In practice that means:

  1. Workers performing safety-critical tasks (driving, machinery operation, working at heights, electrical work) need adequate vision
  2. Workers using screens for extended periods are entitled to vision care arrangements
  3. Where prescription safety glasses are required, employers usually meet or contribute to the cost
  4. Pre-employment and periodic vision screening is best practice in many industries
  5. State regulators (Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, SafeWork NSW) provide specific guidance for high-risk industries.

What a Workplace Eye Test Includes

A standard on-site workplace eye test covers:

  6. Visual acuity (distance, intermediate, near)
  7. Colour vision (where required for the role)
  8. Stereoscopic depth perception
  9. Visual field screening
  10. Computer/screen vision assessment
  11. Refraction and prescription update if needed
  12. WHS-compatible report for the employer
  13. Safety-glasses prescription where required
  14. For roles with specific visual standards (commercial drivers, rail, aviation, mining, electrical), we follow the relevant industry standard.

    How On-Site Mobile Testing Works

Sending workers off-site for individual eye tests costs hours of lost productivity per worker. On-site mobile testing keeps people on the job:

    1. We confirm the number of workers, the role types, and the preferred date.

    2. We arrive at your site with portable diagnostic equipment and set up in a quiet meeting room.

    3. Workers cycle through 15–20 minute appointments throughout the day, scheduled around shifts.

    4. We invoice the employer directly — single invoice, single contact.

    5. Reports are provided in a WHS-compatible format.

A typical day on-site can cover 20–25 workers.

    What's Bulk-Billed and What's Not

Comprehensive examinations for eligible Medicare workers are bulk-billed. The employer is invoiced for:

  15. Coordination and on-site visit fees
  16. Safety-glasses dispensing (where required)
  17. Industry-specific reporting
  18. We can quote per visit or set up an annual program for larger employers.
